Can you have a checking account without activating your debit card?

Does someone know if you can have a checkings account, without activating your debit card? Would the bank do anything to you if you don't activate your card right away or for a long time? Can you just have the checkibg account without activating your debit card?|||If you don't activate the card within 30 days - it will be void.

It will not work if you try to use it in the future.

/|||You do not have to have a debit card at all.|||Activating or not activating your debit card has NOTHING to do with the status of your checking account.|||I never activated my card either, this does not change anything in your checking account. You just can't use the card for purchases.|||Having a checking account has nothing to do with activating your debit card . A debit card is there so that you may use the ATM at you convenience , (ex . so that you don't stand in line at the bank to make a quick withdrawal , or over the weekend when the bank is closed , or you can use it to make a payment at the store/ market . Unlike a credit card when using a debit card , a direct withdrawal from your account will be made after authorization . If you prefer not to use your debit , then don't . Unlike a credit card using it does not earn you a score .|||My bank sent me a second debit card (not a replacement and not reqested) in January of 2009. I have not activated it and the original card still works. You can even tell them when you open the account you don't want a debit card issued. You are more likely to have a problem if you actually try to activate the card after waiting.
