How long would it take to refund money to a debit card?

Hi so i accidently bought 2 of the same items from nordstrom with my debit card. I had called to cancel one order. How long does it usually take to refund money back into my account?|||It can take up to a week. Keep an eye on your checking account so that you don't accidentally spend it before it is back in your account.

Check back with Nordstrom's to make sure that they are submitting the credit back to your account.|||It could also depend on which bank you go with. But sometimes, it will take one-three days for it to become active on your account. Im a employee at USAA bank and it could be in your account tomorrow. Banks do transactions on weekends. If its not in your accounnt by monday, then file a dispute with them again.

How old do you have to be to get a Debit Card?

I am 12 and i was planning to get a debit card am i old enough????|||Yes.|||yeah.

just need a parent to open the account for you.

you'll get a youth account that's free.

when you turn 18 you'll get a letter asking you to choose a savings/checking account %26amp; it'll cost you money every month.

but right now you can get a savings account with your parents consent for free.|||if you can get a checking account at your bank, you can get a debit card, since the debit account is linked to your checking account.|||I think you can get one at any age with a parent's consent. 18 without.|||Ask your parents And Yes yu can hehe|||yes ask about teen acounts

How to apply for paypal debit card?

So the basic background is that I want to buy from amazon but they don't take Paypal so I was interested in the debit card that Paypal offers. In the application it asks for a credit card but I don't have one. Is there any any way to get the paypal debit card without an existing credit card. Currently by payPal is linked to my savings.|||go to www.paypal.com click on credit card.|||Oscar, please go apply for the debit card. That way paypal will do a credit check and figure out whether or not you are 18 or not. If you are not, they will freeze the account until you are.

Is there any way to prevent an accidental debit card overdraft?

Can a 15-yr-old get a debit card with parent signature and somehow not accidentally overdraft? For instance, if the amount in the account is $20 and they try to make a purchse of something that costs $25, is there anyway that the card could have some sort of protection on it so that they couldn't go over the amount they have in the account?|||Contact the bank.

How about learning to keep track of your bank balance and not spending money you don't have?|||This isn't possible as there is no way to know what checks have been written on the account. If the account was only electronic the card can be set not to authorize purchases if there is not a positive available balance. The problem is that the kid has no way of knowing what the parent has done to the account.

A better way to do this is to set up a student account funded by the parent's account. The debit card on the student account can then be set to not to allow an OD. The parent can also control the spending of the child this way while allowing the child to make their own spending decisions.|||yes your bank will have on over draft protection. It just like a credit card. If you go over that part take over and you will save on the fees.

But you have to be approved just like owning a credit card.|||jsut tell your bank you dont want the card to have overdrafts.|||You can take overdraft protection off of your card, through your bank. All they would have to do is sign a piece of paper authorizing the change.|||I guess you didn't read the message your bank sent you (via e-mail, logging into your account or snail mail) where you can opt-out of overdraft protection such that the card would be denied. I know you got it because it was federal law that all customers be notified of this.

So, contact the bank and set it up.

Can a River Island credit note be put back onto my debit card?

I bought some jeans from River Island a while back on my debit card but took them back because they were faulty. I accidentally forgot to take the original debit card so they issued me with a credit note for the full amount.

Can I have a savings account from a credit union AND hold a debit card from citibank?

Is that possible?

I'm graduating high school and need a savings account for college and a debit card is probably helpful as well.|||Yes, you can have accounts at two different financial institutions. Remember, your citibank debit card will only work from the funds you have in the citibank account. You will not be able to use that card to access the funds you have in your account at the credit union.

If you are interested in having the ability to transfer funds from your savings account to your "checking" or debit card account quickly, easily and with no fees, you'll want to have two separate accounts at one financial institution.

Hope this helps. Good luck!|||I don't see why you couldn't.

How do I pay the game service Steam with a debit card?

I just got a Visa debit card from my Chase bank the other day and I've been trying to use it with Steam and other over-the-internet purchases but it always gets declined. I'm pretty sure I activated it already since I put it in an ATM not long ago. I'm 16 and new to this sort of thing and it would come in handy if I could find out how to work it right. So how exactly do I purchase things like steam games, xbox live memberships, or other purchases online?|||Colaterals and evidence of the finance you have in your Chase Bank.....and the credit limit

Why do banks want you to use your debit card as credit on purcases?

Recently I received a letter from my bank offering me a free airline ticket if I made 5 purchases in 3 months using my debit card as a credit card by signing the receipt instead of using a PIN. Whats the catch? What does the bank get out of it? Whats the difference?|||WEll, it is a rewards incentive ... same that credit cards offer.. if they are backed by Visa .... that is their reward.

Good Luck!|||I know that the company that processes the charges gets a fee from the store, you and the bank so it saves them money|||One reason -- they make more money that way. They collect a fee on every credit card purchase from the merchant. So that signature means money for the bank. Debit card purchases are processed differently. Also if people get in the habit of using the card for credit rather than debit they may be inclined to spend more. If you're using the card for debit it is coming right out of the account and you have to have the money to cover the purchase right then but if you use the card as credit, you'll be billed later and if you don't pay off the entire bill or don't pay it in a timely manner, the bank wins again with the interest and/or late fees.|||The bank charges the stores for every credit card purchase they process. At my shop, we are only charged 25 cents when you use your card as a debit card, but are charged a percentage on credit purchases, plus fees associated with "settlement" and "billing". For an average $20 charge card purchase I can sometimes pay up to 3-4 bucks in fees as opposed to the 25 cents I would have been charged if I had made you enter your pin. Now, my percentages are higher than big stores, because I have a lower volume of credit card sales, but you can imagine how it can quickly add up.|||The banks get a fee from the stores when you use a "credit card." My husband checked into accepting credit cards for his business a few years ago and I think the bank he talked to was going to charge 4% of each transaction. My credit union sent me a letter stating that I could use my debit card as a debit card 8 times in a month for free. If I use it more than 8 times as a debit card then I will be charged a fee. I can use it as a credit card as many times as I want and I won't be charged a fee.|||When you use your debit card with the PIN, you get charged a small fee for using your own money - in many cases. When you do it as a credit, you don't pay the fee, the merchant does, and it's larger than the one you pay.

How do i get the PIN for my debit card from Chase?

I have just received my debit card(Chase) in the mail and activated it, but no PIN was ever given. It was not given when i opened the account, in the mail with the card or by phone. I've trying calling customer service, but the whole thing is completely automated. Is it going to come to me in the mail later, am I supposed to go back to the bank, or is it something else? Thanks|||call the 1-800 # on back and go thru the prompts until you get a customer service rep. there should be somewhere where the automated service asks you to customize your pin,and then you can enter your own pin # which might be easier to remember than the one they usually send in the mail at a different time than your card and they do that for security reasons.

you could possibly go on the internet as well and do online banking there should be a link or something to activate a new pin # as well|||all banks send the debit card first then a couple of days later send the pin number that way identity theives cannot steal from you.|||They Sent me mine in the mail when I singed up. You may be able to request the Pin to be sent to you with the automated system. I have set up an account online with my bank so I can look at services there. You must request it be sent to you if you want a PIN. They chose mine when I got mine they did not let me change or choose my own. For your sakes I hope things have changed!|||You receive the debit card first and then in the mail you will receive your PIN number, all banks do this as a safety so no one has your debit card and PIN number together. Relax your PIN number is on its way! Best Wishes!|||The card and PIN come at different times. If you don't get it in a few days call them and work through the computer voice til you get a real person on the line...good luck.|||this sounds like fraud

Can I buy something of Ebay without using Credit or Debit Card?

I want to buy something off Ebay, but I dont want't to use like my parents credit card or debit or check. Is there like a pre-paid Ebay Card like a gift card you can buy with cash and, it transfers the cash money into the Ebay Pre-paid card? I need help please someone help me out here.|||1. You have to be 18, and your post implies you are not.

2. You have to be able to pay. A prepaid card won't work because Paypal doesn't accept them.

3. An eBay gift card won't work because you can't use unless you have an existing account that is linked to your real credit card.

4. The car to transfer money also requires you to be 18.|||Pre paid or gift cards do not work on the paypal ebay system so no point wasting time. You can with a bank account deposit money to paypal to make purchases though|||You can buy I 拢25 gift card for paypal and visa from Morrisons.

Can I use my Debit Card for online purchasing such as eBay and Playstation store?

I recently got my debit card, and I was curious if you could purchase online such as like things from eBay or Playstation store to buy things online? I was wondering if debit cards are exceptional or if only credit cards can be used.|||Yes, you can use your debit card just like a credit card (as long as it says Visa or Mastercard at the bottom.)

The payment processing for credit cards goes through those two companies. They then charge your bank for the purchases you make.

How old do you have to be to get a debit card?

I'm 12 and I want a debit card so I dont lose my money, i always wanted to keep money but i always spent it. Im still a kid I know.|||18 to most likely open it by yourself. Ask a parent/guardian to help you get one, they will still manage your account, but you will have the debit card for yourself.|||Old enough my six year old sister had one till she bought a hot tub and my dad get really mad and took it away and burned it. :D

Is a credit card better than a debit card?

I currently have a debit card and find it very convenient while making transactions at merchant dealers and online. But, most of my friends have a credit card and tell me to take one. I always think of credit cards as a way of getting caught in the 'loop of loans'. But my friend tells me that using a credit card is a good way to build a credit history. Please comment on this. And also tell me some good credit card companies.|||Your friends are right in the fact that a credit card will build a credit history, but most people do not know how to manage using credit cards. Most people make purchases that they would not make if they were paying cash out of their pocket. They figure that they will just pay for it later. That is when people get into trouble. Most credit card companies will start a new customer out with a $2000 limit. That does not mean that you should use the whole limit. Credit cards should only be used for emergency purchases. Food, alcohol, clothing, and entertainment are not emergency purchases no matter how many college students will tell you otherwise. Do not get a credit card if you are not responsible enough to manage your money. My wife and I just recently purchased our first home and we had to use her as the primary applicant for our mortgage. This is because I have zero credit. I have never owned a credit card or had any type of loan besides a student loan. I am a college graduate that owns my own car and has a good job, but I am not a good canidate for a loan since I have no established credit history. Once again, your friends are right, but you need to figure out if you are ready for the responsibility of a credit card. I recommend applying for an MBNA Visa or Mastercard for your first card. They are very accepting of first time creditors. They just gave me my first credit card. :) Good Luck and God Bless.|||You can visit http://www.debteraserzone.com and find very useful tips and several articles on credit card related matters.

|||go with visa or mastercard

credit cards usually offer rewards points (as can many debit cards) , and credit cards WILL build your credit higher so if you have the cash to pay them off eventually, go with a credit card. If you cant make the payments and get by on just the minimums, then stick with your debit card only.|||credit cards are a good way to build crediting rating, but just use them in emergencys, use your debit card and you know what you can spend without spending over you limit.|||get a credit card if you have no credit history. You do need a credit history if you ever want to buy a car or a house or any other large purchase. Just be careful, credit card companies are experts in screwing over consumers. Don't get cards that charge annual fees or have high APRs. Get ONE card, charge something on it, and pay it off. A good way to build credit is to use your credit card to buy groceries, then immediately pay it off.|||if you've made it this far without a credit card, then dont' get one. you're right, they are more likely to lead you into debt/trouble. with a debit card you can only spend what you really have. stick with what works for you.|||Yes, a debit card is an easy way to make transactions and live in today's close to "cashless" world. Having good credit is like having your right arm....for the rest of your life, you'll rely on both. It is OK to use a credit card as long as you are careful not to abuse it and just get carried deep into debt for purchases you can't afford. Use it wisely, pay promptly and yes, you'll have great credit. Great credit will be rewarding when you go to shop for a car, house or are in need of a loan for whatever reason.|||That's all true. But credit cards are limited to $50 liability for you if someone uses them in an attempt to rip you off, whereas debit cards are not protected at all. With debit cards a thief can empty your bank account and the bank won't reimburse you.

But you're right, too. Borrowing money is never a good thing. A good compromise would be to use a credit card and religiously pay it off immediately.|||Credit cards ARE NOT a good idea. When you have a credit card, you are borrowing money. Too many people get into trouble with credit cards because they begin to borrow more money than they can afford.

You can never spend more with a debit card than you have because it's attached to your bank.

Take a few moments and browse through Yahoo Answers in the 'Credit' section and you will find many people that are in financial trouble because they've borrowed money.

Building your credit is a myth. The only people that want you to build your credit are banks and credit card companies. You don't need a credit history to borrow money....ask your parents or grandparents. They borrowed money before credit cards and/or credit history existed.

Scott....|||Credit cards are a good way to build some credit so long as you pay on time. They are bad because some people get carried away. I started off with a card I used to purchase gas only. Every time I'd fill up I put money aside to pay the bill in full each month. That way creditors see I can pay bills on a regular basis. Also try getting a contract cell phone to build good credit. Know your limits and spend only what you can afford.|||There is good and bad. With a debit card, there is no interest. With a credit card, you can build your credit history but, if you don't pay off the bill each month, then you are paying interest.

How long does it take to recieve money from returning an item with debit card?

Thursday I returned a 32" Plasma HDTV at Walmart valued at $580 (I bought and returned it using my Debit Card). How long will it take for the money to be returned to my account? Theres a good deal on a Samsung LCD online that I want to buy but I don't know how long it will last.|||It typically depends on your bank and Walmart's financial department to report the return on your card. It typically takes anywhere from 2 buisness days to a week. Given today is Saturday, if it doesnt appear on your statement by the end of today then you'll have to wait till about midday Monday to see if it has been added back to your account.|||it can take upto 7 business days an sometimes 14days|||It usually is a situation wherein businesses take their time to credit your account. They claim that no one can count Saturdays and Sundays, but use business days. This would be any day from Monday - Friday. If you returned an item on a Friday, you can easily look for Monday to be counted as your first business day. There is often a lot of delay. When you buy something, these same stores will charge you immediately on whatever day you buy the item. Just keep a record of what folk do and always darken your copies of transactions, for future reference. I understand your pain. I definitely keep my receipts for years and in a binder with plastic sleeves. I wish you much success. Peace!|||Should only take a day or two--HOWEVER--I wanted a return on pay pal and they took a full month and BOA wanted an affidavit before the funds were back in my account and I could use pay pal again.|||Up to 30 days. Can I get an allowance automatically through a debit card?

I have a debit card with chase, is there anyway I can get like $5 a week from my parents credit/debit account into my account automatically?|||Yes, but your parents would have to request it through their bank. Most banks having automatic transfers... or they can just transfer it manually. (There might be a fee associated with automatic transfers, which makes it pointless for $5)|||yeah have them deposit it into you account.|||get a job|||I'm pretty sure, since you can have part of your payment automatically deposited into your savings account. I guess you could have it put into someone elses.

Although, I would reccomend parents doing so. What it you did something wrong and they don't want to give you an allowance.

They would have to go through a hassle to stop the deposite, and when their not angry anymore they'll have to restart it again.|||They'd have to set it up with their bank. If your account is in the same bank, shouldn't be real hard to do.|||Yes, you can have them place five dollars on your card a week . I am not sue how far you are going to get off of 20.00 a month, sweetie.

This is listed in Amazon's terms and conditions (search "Refunds"). You should also check with your bank as to when the money will be available.

As always, it is a good practice to maintain the cancellation email and refund information, and check your account frequently until you get your money back.

No checking account either I pay all bills with cash.|||Don't do it--payday loans are only get you into more and more trouble.

Sell what you can--plasma, possessions, etc.

Just don't get start with the payday loans. You'll end up owing more than you started off owing.

It sounds like you're realizing that you are low on cash, but you aren't realizing that maybe your lifestyle needs to be re-examined.|||poor lady that sucks you need your paystub from you job first not just a debit card and then maybe bring it to a bank|||Try this site.....Looks like they have a lot of different options! Hope this helps!|||Use this as a last resort. A few companies will provide an installment loan, if you get direct deposit from your employer. I think most employers allow you to deposit money in up to three accounts when you get paid. The company, in the source box, has you authorize the payment amount, directly from your pay check and into the company's account as one of your authorized deposits to cover the monthly or biweekly payment.

I believe they run your credit for this loan product (don't worry, they're not picky) and they do charge between 100-200%, but it's an amortized loan (you can pay it down to zero in x number of months) and it's only for a couple of months. If you borrow $700 you end up paying like $90 every two weeks and after 12 payments, you're done.

http://introxl.com/|||well a 700 dollar payday loan will end up costing your about 15000 so i would forget that route == second how can you have a debit card with out a checking account -- but that is a minor off the wall question == if you pay all your bills with cash you cant have any credit card debt so go to everyone you owe money to utilities included and tell them you are going to be late and you will pay their late fees which is 1000 percent less than a payday loan and tried to cut back on everything until you get back on your feet!!!|||avoid payday loans. unless you like paying 300% interest.|||Don't even consider a payday loan. Can you get a checking account debit card witout the visa logo on it?

Or the MC logo?

I don't want it to be able to be run as credit.

I want to be forced to type a 4 digit pin.

This is in case I lose it - someone does not go out on a shopping spree.

And then I would have to deal with fraud at the bank.

Banks used to - years ago.

But do they still do this for customers that request an

ATM/debit card only - without the credit part of it?|||Of course you can still get them. Just go in and ask for a debit card.|||All cards have a 4-digit PIN - it is the means by which you use the card in an ATM.

Virtually all debit cards these days have the Visa logo - never actually seen a debit card with the MasterCard logo.

Perhaps if you are so paranoid, you should stick to using cash. Billions of people use these cards without any problem|||You can go to your bank and ask. Some banks will still give you an ATM only card if you absolutely insist. But some banks don't have them available.

I finally gave up on returning the logo debit cards and asking for an ATM only card. I just take the stupid logo'd card and put it in a safe place. I never use it, not even at an ATM.

What are the benefits of having a debit card?

Can you list about 5 or more benefite of having a debit card, stuff like its safer ....etc

I don't want a comparison to credit cards just list reasons why a debit card is a good alternative to cash

I am asking this because i really want one and when my dad asks why do i need one? i am sort of stuck there, and i cant think! I do have reasons but i need some good solid ones, PLEASE|||if you have a DEBIT card, it means you only spend the money that you have. not like a credit card where you buy **** loads, find yourself in debt and then your screwed.|||Well, ask yourself why you want one in the first place. If you need a debit card rather than cash, there must be a reason? If so, there's your answer.|||Not sure where you are, but here in England it is not possible to have a debit card without a bank account. The debit card serves as an electronic check book - you pay for something with your debit card and the funds are automatically taken from your bank account.

A card that you put money on (without having a bank account) is actually a prepaid credit card.|||Debit cards are much more safer, you don't have to pay tax (i think) and you're basically using your own saving account so if you go over, there is really no worry. But credit cards you have to pay tax and if you go over you have to pay all the money back, with intrest.

Say if you are stuck in the City with no money, you can rely on your debit card to withdraw some money so you can get home safely.

I think that debit cards is like a back-up of your money. If you run out you can always rely on your debit card.|||1- Its safer then cash (theft)

2- You can buy things online

3- Chase debit card can earn cash back or points (annual fee but pays off if you use it instead of cash)

4- You can track your purchases online and track your spendings

5- You cant get in to debt if you don't allow overdraft (spending more then what you have)

the bad thing about debit cards is that they don't build up credit

There are two numbers on your debit card, one is your number and the other has letters and numbers?

Since I do have a pin number for my card, could i still use it as a debit card and have the money come out of my available credit? I'm short this week now because of stupid Aldi.|||No your CC will only work as Credit. You can use it at an atm machine with your pin to get a cash advance. But this is probably the worst thing to do from a credit card.|||No, it doesn't work like a debit card. You can withdraw money from the card using the PIN# assigned form any ATM that accepts the card format that your card is. The problem with doing this is that cash advance interest rate is huge.

How do I make a DEBIT CARD at 19 ?

So I asked my mom if I could make a debit card, but she said that she would have to go with me to sign some papers at the bank.

Do I really need a parent with me in order to make a debit card at 19 years old?

I don't have any credit. Can I get a debit card by myself?

Thank you so much!|||yes you can. however it requires that you create a savings account and a checking account with the bank of your choice. most people may find the the level of paper cumbersome. so having a parent who is familiar with the banks system could be beneficial. but if you do want to go it alone be sure you read everything that is given to you carefully and be informed on hidden charges that can be applied for overdrafts, etc

Hope this helps.

-Pfc Ender|||Well maybe your mom doesn't know but you can do it all by yourself. I am 20 and already been with 2 banks without having any credit or a parent. You have to be at least 16 to do it yourself and of course min 25 to put in your account. Do it yourself and get your own freedom unless your mom is thinking you want a debit card on her bank account?

Anyways you don't need credit to get a debit card. A debit card is for the bank.|||A credit card is different from a credit card. A debit card lets you purchase things without writing a check or using cash, but it draws directly from your savings account or checking account. A credit card lets you buy things without actually having the money, but are required to pay it off over a period of time. You need money to be able to have a debit card as it comes directly from your account.|||Debit cards are tied to bank accounts, you don't need a credit rating since, you are not taking out a loan like with a credit card, you can't buy more than what is in your account. Be aware you don't have the same buyer protection that credit cards provide. For online purchases it would be safer to use a paypal account.

You can also buy gift cards that act as credit/debit cards, the last $25 one I bought at a local retailer cost an additional 16% service charge. These perpaid cards protect you from your card number being ripped off and having your bank account emptied.|||ask your mom and chek your akauan ask your self. you cant do or not get a debit card.because the debit card your akauan must active and have the limit money in the akauan.

What is needed along with a debit card to sign up to paypal?

Trying to sign up, need to know what I need. I already have a debit card, do I need anything else? 10 pts!!!|||You will need a checking account or a valid credit card. Today that usually means you'll have both.

PayPal uses a bank account as an additional source for funds if your paypal account is short but you want to use them for payments.

In order to do business with some internet business you will also have to have your account Verified. This means PayPal will get your bank account info from you and make two small, just pennies, deposits into the account, then you will need to go online and tell them how much the deposits were.

I don't think PayPal will accept your debit card as being worth much, especially if its prepaid.

Only a bank account will do the trick with them. Sorry.

I lost my debit card. Can I go to my local Bank of America bank and withdraw money in person?

I lost my debit card, and I'm in need of cash. Can I go to my local Bank of America bank and withdraw cash there in person by speaking with a bank teller or representative? What sort of info would I need to provide and are there any fees associated with it? Thanks!|||Yes you may. The first thing you should do is go to your local Bank of America and report your debit card lost/stolen. This way you can prevent any unauthorized activity on your account. They will cancel your old debit card and reissue you a new one which you will receive in about 7-10 business days, make sure you reset your pin also.

Next, you can withdrawal at the teller line if you have your check book you can write a check out to yourself or to "cash" and present your identification. If you do not have your check book, a debit slip can be prepared the teller will most likely ask you for your account number if you don't know it you will have to give her your social to verify your account. Of course, she will ask for your identification aswell. To withdraw from your checking there is no fee, but to withdraw from your savings there may or may not be a fee depending on the type of account that you have.

Ummm, I think that's about it. good luck!|||You have to go to the bank in person and report a lost card and get the replacement. Then write a check to "Cash" or have the rep you speak to about the lost card prepare a debit slip and deduct cash from your account. You'll need your ID!|||Ask Bank of America. Making a phone call will get you an answer quicker than Yahoo Answers and you will know if it's the correct answer too.|||sure just write a check and cancel the old card and get them to issue you a new one. Can my parents see what i buy with a prepaid debit card?

They gave me the prepaid debit card for christmas, im just wondering, will they be able to see what i bought? Im not sure if they bought it with a credit card or cash, if thats something you should know.|||Yes, they will see. They have it set up so they can monitor what you do with the card.|||If you're talking about those Mastercard prepaid "gift card", no they won't see.|||Maybe. There's really no way to tell.

All they need to do is log into the on-line account before they give it to you.|||if you buy any thing else from their credit card how is it possible that they dont see what did you buy.... so nice...

I want to get a preloaded debit card for someone, and load it with my money and have it sent to them directly. And then I don't want them to have access to my billing info either. Do you know of a site that will do this?|||I'm not sure what you need it for but if it is to a person, you could ask them if they would accept a VISA gift card. To a company, I don't think they will accept that.

If you could provide a little more information, I'm sure you will get better answers.

How to get a checking account/debit card at 14?

I live in Boston, MA, I already have a savings account at a local bank and a building society in the UK but I am very interested in opening a checking account so that I can get a debit card. My reason for this is that my friends are constantly losing money and I feel that a debit card if a safer option then always carying cash around, but I don't know what bank to use (Bank of America? Citizens?), which type of account, or even what are good interest rates. Can anyone help me?|||At 14 both Bank of America and Citizens will give you a debit card - but only if you get an adult on the account as well. I would also check Soverign Bank as well. Check there websites on the web - all of them give more detail on requirements.|||Apply for a debit card where you have your savings.

Thank you so much!|||How do you GET* a debit card?

1 - You need to have money, your own money.

2 - You need to take that money to a bank, (any bank,) open a checkin account, and deposit your money into said account.

3 - Ask the bank for a debit card.

If you are in the United States, you only need to be 18 to open your own checking account.|||A debit card is "attached" to a checking account.

IF you have a checking account, talk to your bank.

If it is YOUR account, your mother would have nothing to do with it; it would depend on the bank and the banking regulations.|||At 19, you don't need your mother to open a bank account. The debit card is tied to checking accounts.

When you buy something online why does it not show a debit card option and only credit card?

Can I use PayPal and a debit card together to pay for something?

Is it possible to purchase something online with a debit card but also use money from a paypal account to pay some of the charges? Also I am trying to buy something from Karmaloop.|||YES it is. What you do, is pay using paypal, who will deduct any money from your paypal account, and then the remainder or the amount from your debit card or bank account (which MUST be the one you added and registered with Paypal)

I do it all the time!|||If someone is asking you to kick in your debit card rather than just fortifying your PayPal account, maybe you should reconsider the transaction.|||No I don't think it's possible to pay for something online with two different payment types.|||only if the place your buying from says they take debit cards.

What age do you need to be in order to have a debit card?

I'm 17 and I was hoping I could make my own debit card. I currently dont' work, and I know it is somewhat pointless to have a debit card if you don't have a job. I just want a debit card so I can buy things online once in a while.

I know this has nothing to do with religion, but you guys seem to need a break from religion anyways lol.|||I think there are ways to get one at 16 like if your parents have an account with you but that's about the only way I know of if under 18. Sorry bud, but 18 seems to be the common census here so... good luck. And yes most of us can use a break so thank you very much it is deeply appreciated lol

EDIT: Actually I just thought about this... if you get a Job and save some money you could have your folks or someone you TRUST go to their bank and put some money on a pre payed debit card issued out of that bank. You could use that and it should work just fine. You would want to check into expiration and such but I think that may solve your issues|||As far as I know you have to be 18.. Or maybe your parents can sign for permission. Ask your bank.|||3

Thank you so much!|||No, you don't need your mother and you don't need any credit.

Just go to any bank (Bank of America is probably your best bet as they don't charge overdraft fees and they have many locations) and sign up for a checking account and a savings account. If they're a major bank (BoA, Citi, etc) , they SHOULD set you up with a debit card on the spot. Most banks require you be over 18 to sign up for these accounts.

And just FYI, a debit card isn't like a credit card. It's linked directly to your checking account. It's nice because then it's almost impossible to spend more money than you have.

How do I transfer money from my paypal balance to my debit card (the card is already linked to my account)?

I put money in my paypal account and it showed up in my balance, but not in my debit card balance.|||You can't. You have to transfer it to a bank account. You can request a check, but they will charge you $1.50 and it can take 5-10 WEEKS to get a check from paypal.|||Are you referring to your PayPal debit card?

If yes, you don't have to worry about that anymore. Your PayPal balance is also your debit card balance. so if you wanna withdraw funds from an ATM, you can do so just select current instead of savings

If you are referring to your debit card from your own bank, you need to enter your banking info (even though the debit card account is the same with the one you are about to enter) to withdraw funds. Takes 3-4 business days to get the money. Sorry, no instant withdrawal option except the debit card from PayPal.

Can I use my debit card as credit card ?

I have seen someone saying that I can use my debit card as credit card.

1. What are the advantages ?

2. When I swipe the debit card, the card readers automatically knows that its debit and will ask me for the pin, how do I use it as credit card ?|||The one word answer is: NO.

Debit cards are in effect, just like a checking account. You deposit money and then using the debit card, effectively write a check against the funds on deposit. A credit card is an unsecured short term loan, where you borrow money with preapproved credit and then repay the loan at a later date. So, you see, the major difference is in who has the money at the moment when you use the card. With the debit card, the bank has the money already on deposit. With the credit card, you have the money in your savings account until you give it to the bank later. With a debit card, you PAY them to hold your money and for the convenience of using a card instead of cash from your back pocket. With a credit card, your money stays in your savings account earning interest for YOU until you have to pay the bill. Provided you pay your credit card bill in full, you are charged NO INTEREST from the time you make a purchase until the bill arrives and you pay the bill. You could go for at least 25 and as many as 55 days earning interest before you turn the monmey over to pay your bill in full BEFORE the due date. Frankly, I can see NO logic in a debit card. Why not simply use a paper check? With the debit card, they charge you fees and woe be unto you if you overdraw your account. I've heard horror stories of people running up huge fees and penalties. A friend of mine got hit for a bunch recently. He forgot to make a deposit and then made about a dozen small purchases of a few dollars each. Half of these were made after he ran out of money. He was hit for a $35 penalty for EACH overdraft. For charges that totaled less than $50 in goods, he was charged about $200 in penalties. Debit cards are THE biggest cash cow for banks ever devised. As long as I pay my credit card bill in full every month and am not ever late in paying, the bank is extending me an interest free short term loan, AND for every day my money stays in the bank, it earns interest for ME until I turn it over to the bank to pay my bill.

So, you tell ME, does a debit card make ANY sense to YOU? I DO admit one thing, it IS convenient to use a card instead of going to the bank and withdrawing cash from your savings account. But still, why pay SO much for this convenience? Or are you really that lazy that you can't plan ahead for a purchase and simply withdraw cash in advance and then pay as you go? I use my credit cards ALL of the time instead of carrying cash. Then, when the bill is due, I pay in full, every month. Interest on those dollars that stayed in my savings account adds up AND over time, they keep on increasing my credit limit to the point that I could buy a BMW and charge it. By the way, you can negotiate with a bank to waive an annual fee on a credit card, but you can NOT get the fees on a debit card waived. I wonder why not...|||Yes you can use your debit card as a credit card as long as it has a Visa, mastercard etc logo on it. The advantages are that you will be charging your account checking account the amount that you spend which means you will be spending your own money from your checking account and you don't have to pay back anything to the bank (unless you overdraft). Another thing is that you don't get charged interest or an annual fee. Unlike a credit card if you don't pay it in full every month you will be charged interest and their maybe an annual fee that you need to pay.|||Tell the cashier that you want to do credit, or sometimes there is a button on the reader that selects credit.

No big advantage to using a debit card as credit, except that you might not have to sign if it's a small purchase, and won't have to key in your number.

What is happening when you swipe your card now is that it's being recognized as an ATM card, with (sometimes) the capability of cash back. This is cheaper for the store, so I can see why they might have a preference for it.|||Yes you can if it has a visa or mastercard logo on it. You can use it just like you would a credit card at any store that accepts credit cards but the funds will be deducted from your checking account.

When you swipe it, it'll normally give you the option to use it like a credit card where you will be asked to sign the receipt OR it'll ask you if you want to use it as a debit card where you will be asked to enter your PIN. I would suggest that you use it as a credit card for security reasons so that you don't have to worry about someone possibly seeing your PIN as you enter it.|||When it asks for your PIN, press cancel and the credit option will show.

Are there fees for using a debit card on a cruise?

I'm going on a cruise to Bermuda from Boston. Does anyone know if there are fees for using your debit card or an ATM machine on the cruise ship, and if so, about how much are the fees? My bank is Bank of America and I have Visa. Would I just be better off getting traveler's checks?

Thanks!|||First you would not use your atm on a cruise ship at all.If you buy something on a cruise ship it is deducted from your on board account that you set up before you cruise. Now they do have an atm on board cruise ships so you can get money out for using in ports. I don't remember how much they cost, but it was somewhere around $2.00 per transaction. It would be better to use an atm after you get into a port. Or do like I do, I use my debit card for all purchases in port. Just be sure to call your bank in advance of travel to let them know you will be using the card out of the USA.|||First of all, the only places you would use cash is the casino %26amp; ports. But, you can even get cash from your room key for the casino. You just use your room key which is linked to your credit card. Dont even bother using the ship ATM machine, the fee is about $8 bucks for each transaction on some cruise lines. Just put a few hundreds in your wallet. Simple.

Hope I helped!|||On our cruise it was a $6.00 or $7.00 fee...but if your taking out $300 bucks i guess it's not that bad...if possible you can find a ATM machine before you board the ship at a airport, hotel, gas station etc. You will probably save 2 or 3$.|||Now is the time to call the customer service number on your Bank Of America Visa card and ask about this. A growing number of financial institutions reimburse you for ATM fees. Only they could tell you for sure.

I used my Paypal account to transfer money to my Bank of America debit card. How long does it take to have the money on my card available to use?....Does it really take 3-4 days or has it been shorter for some?|||Hi,

Just to clarify...

The money is transferred to your bank account, not directly to the debit card (in other words, the transfer makes the funds available on your debit card).

Most banks take 3-4 business days to process an ach transaction %26amp; you would want to exclude weekends from that calculation.|||Yes, it really can take 3 to 4 business or banking days.

What are the benefits of having a debit card?

Can you list about 5 or more benefite of having a debit card, stuff like its safer ....etc

Should I get a Gas Card, or should I just use a separate debit card for fuel purchases?

I want to have a separate account that I can ration money into ( For instance, only $75 per week) to spend on Gas. Does this make more sense to do with a gas card or a separate debit card/checking account?

-Gas Card benefits vs Debit card simplicity

-Gas card savings vs Interest gained from Checking account

Which makes more sense?|||Well, you aren't going to get much interest on a low balance checking account. Most fuel cards give you some sort of rebate on the gas you use so the gas card makes more sense. One of the other tricks out there is these grocery stores that are offering fuel perks. If you buy gift cards to stores that you already shop at and plan ahead, you can get fuel perks on money that your were going to spend anyway.|||The strategy appears to be controlling use of the vehicle(s) by running out of money in your account, likely when you are far from home in the middle of night.

Instead, plan how much driving you can afford, and plan to avoid trips that might take you over that limit. You have to do this at a planning level rather than a run out if I overuse basis.

Because of course when you run out in the middle of the night far away, you are going to use your other card anyway.

Getting family agreement on cutting down on fuel consumption is easy. Getting people to abide by those agreements is what is hard. You have to monitor usage against plan weekly at first, and later on it may go to monthly, it may not.

But dividing your money up into different pockets accomplishes nothing. You have to plan, and work your plan, monitor the plan.

People who budget by dividing money up into different pockets never manage to achieve the objectives.|||I'm not sure what you mean by gas card benefits or savings, if you buy a $75 gas card every week you have $75, not sure how you get benefits of any kind. If you're not talking about buying a gift card, and are talking about a gas credit card that you can charge gas to, you're not really rationing money to it. I would say use a separate debit card, just automatically move money every week and you never have to do anything after you set it up.|||What makes more sense is to discipline yourself . Get one credit card. Charge every purchase you can to that card. Don't buy any more than you can afford to pay. Pay promptly upon receipt of the statement. That makes the most sense. Don't spend what you can't afford.

If I use my debit card and choose charge, will it try to pull funds right away?

Because of the banks being closed today, a transfer that I deposited Friday has not shown up yet. I have a couple of urgent purchases but not enough funds. If I use my debit card as a credit card, will that give me 24 hours? Will an approval code for the full amount be needed? I live in the U.S by the way. Thank you in advance for your advice!|||When you use your debit card and choose credit (charge) instead, It does not immediately take out the funds. It places them on "hold" until the funds are verified. Debit takes them right away. If you did the transfer friday after 2, it wont show up until tuesday because today is columbus day and the banks are closed. You should be fine. I think that they transactions and the transfers will show up at the same time. Don't worry-I have been in your situation before.|||It doesn't matter whether you pick debit or charge, with a debit card, the money is deducted very quickly.|||Yes, it can pull the charges right away. You cannot spend what is not available in the account. You will most likely get an overdraft fee from your bank.|||Don't know with the banks closed, but normall when you use your "debit" card the funds are transferred immediately out of your account. They may do this even with the banks closed. To be safe, I would wait until you know the funds have been deposited.|||depends. wachovia will atomaticall take funds out and charge you fee even though transaction will not post for up to three days|||As far as I know if the debit card is also a visa or MasterCard, if you use it as a debit it will come out instantly.....if you use it as a credit card where you have to sign, it will take 2-3 business days.

Can I pay off my credit card with a debit card?

I have a debit card but don't have checks or know my routing number or anything. Is there anyway to pay off my credit card with my debit card? It's a capital one.|||Take money out of your checking acct. and pay at the bank. Trust me it's much easier and you don't realize what's going on as clearly paying with all that plastic|||Your going to need proof of payment. I recommended getting a cashiers check or money order for the amount you are paying off. You can use the Debit card to do the transaction, however make sure it something you sign not PIN, because if you need to dispute anything in the future you will have proof of payment, with your signature on the money order or cashiers check or signature on the receipt on the debit card Transaction. PIN transactions are incredibly hard to dispute or correct.

Let's say you make a Debit PIN transaction and find out that they actually took it out, however they didn't for a different amount then you authorized. It will be hard to prove on your part the amount you authorize for them to do it. There could be also the issue of being double billed.|||Easy way, you have a debit then cash out with your debit card account and pay off for your credit card.|||take out your money from your account and pay it to bank

What's the difference between credit & debit card?

Is a credit card money that the bank gives you to spend but then have to pay back. and is a debit card one where you put in your own money in the bank :s|||A debit card takes money from a pre-established bank account. If you do not have the money in it, you can not use it. A credit card lets you "borrow" money for the time being, with the intentions that you pay for it at the end of the month. Credit cads usually add on an 'interest fee' for their services, so you end up paying more then the actual item is worth.|||Basically yes. But I don't like how you worded the credit part. Credit isn't actually money that a bank gives you. It's an amount that is available to you if you need it. And if you use it, then yes, you have to pay it back.

And the debit card doesn't put your money into a bank account. You deposit it yourself or you have your employer set up a direct deposit and then you use a debit card to pay for purchases.|||Yes, basically. However, credit cards have interest that they charge you for whatever you owe. Say you owe 100$, and the interest is 5%. When it comes time to pay the bill, you now owe 105$. If you miss a payment, they kill your rate and it can go up to 21% (I think that's the max) Debit cards, however, are linked to your checking account in the bank. However much money you have in there is how much you can spend on your card. Both have overdraft fees if you spend more than there is available.|||A credit card is a simple loan. You are "pre-qualified" to borrow money up to the limit on your account. When you make a purchase, the bank advances you the money which is paid to the merchant. Your account then has a negative balance. Anywhere up to 25 days later, the bank sends you a statement showing what you owe. If you pay in full on or before the due date, you are not charged any interest. If you elect to pay in installments, then you are charged interest. There may be an annual fee. If you pay in full, what the bank has done is make you an interest free loan for anywhere from 20 to 55 days. During that time, your money stays in your savings account earning interest for YOU until you take it out to pay the bill. There may be a fee or penalty applied if you go over the account limit. Or, the bank may simply refuse the transaction if it would put you over the limit. I use my credit card for most everything and I pay in full when due, thus avoiding any interest paid to the bank. However, my money has spent time in savings waiting until the bill is due, earning interest for ME.

A debit card works differently than a credit card. A debit account is very much like a checking account only you use a card instead of writing a check. You put money into your account. Most likely, there is an annual fee for the account. So, instead of them paying YOU interest as they do on savings, YOU pay THEM to hold your money! When you make a purchase, the merchant gets paid from your account. Sometimes there is a fee per transaction as well as an annual fee. The merchant does not see anything different at his end of the transaction except for a signature if you use a credit card or you enter your account PIN for a debit card. Either way, he gets paid by the bank for the purchase you made. What is different is everything else from the bank side. There are huge penalties and fees if you overdraw the account and this is where the banks really rake in the dough. The reason is that they do not tell you or refuse the transaction if there is not enough money in your account. Say you use your card and overdraw by $1. Then later that day, you charge another dollar, and finally a 3rd dollar. For going over by $3, you were charged $35 for EACH transaction as a penalty, making your $3 purchases cost you $3 plus $105 in penalty fees! Since there are generally 25 days in the billing cycle, you may be overdrawn a LOT by the time you get your next statement. I recently read a news story about a woman in New York who ended up with $6000 in penalties for about $300 in purchases! She had gone for 3 weeks overdrawn and used her card for everything. THAT is what can happen if you do not pay attention. Recently legislation was passed that forces the bank to allow you to "opt-out" of overdraft protection, which means they now will refuse a transaction IF you tell them in advance that you do not want overdraft protection. The key here is YOU must TELL them. The default is to provide the overdraft protection.

The debit card is THE biggest cash cow the banks have ever devised. Opposite to a savings account where they pay YOU to hold your money for you, with a debit card You pay THEM to hold your money for you! Where is the logic in THAT? All you are doing is paying THEM for the convenience of using a CARD to get at your own money! Why not simply just visit the bank in advance and take some of your cash out of your savings? Is the convenience of having a card to use THAT important to you that you can't go with cash and carry?|||Yup, exactly.

However, to complicate matters, debit cards can be used in credit mode, where you sign instead of using a PIN. But it is still a debit card even though they call it credit.|||A credit card is like the bank paying it for you, but you have to pay them back with interest.

A debit card takes money from your checking account and once that money runs out, you're out of luck.|||A credit card is one You use now and pay it back later.

A debit card is one where you already have the money in your account and have to spend right then.|||A credit card will bend you over and take your pants down

Just be careful to make sure you never spend more than what you have in your account. Overdraft fees are nasty (even at credit unions). Keep at least 2 weeks pay as minimum in that checking account

Don't be surprised if they require you to open a savings account to have a checking.

Can i use a debit card to make online purchases?

I am buying concert tickets online, and under all the information, it asks for "credit card info" and I am wondering if i can use my debit card. Also I am under 18, and my account is under my name, so it is not linked to a person over the age of 18 if that changes anything.|||yes you can.|||Is this debit card linked to your bank account? Does it have a Visa or MC logo on it? If so, you should be able to purchase things just as if it were a credit card (but, it is NOT an extension of credit, it would take the money right from your account)

If this is a prepaid debit card, more than likely, you are going to have a hard time getting it to work online.|||If you owe a credit card and you are under age then you cannot use it for the ticket purchase. But yes, under many circumstances the bank can allow you to manage and led you to do online purchase tickets though debit cards.|||As long as your debit card is the kind that has the Visa or Mastercard logo on it, you can use it on line wherever they accept credit cards.

Can I use a debit card to book a hotel room online?

I am booking a hotel room online, and it said we only accept major credit cards. I do know the difference between a credit and debit card, so my question is, will they also allow the debit card? Or just a credit card?|||Assuming the debit card can be used as a credit (has either the Visa or Mastercard logo), yes it can.

But do not use it when you check in. The hotel will get an approval for the night times the number of nights you are staying, plus about 25% to cover taxes and incidentals. Since it is tied to your bank account this approval will freeze any funds in your account and could cause you to bounce checks.

Many of the major hotel chains use systems that authorizes credit cards automatically when the clerk swipes your card and checks you into a room. To get around this, have the clerk check you in prior to swiping the card. Then have the clerk get an authorization for the exact amount that will be charged. This will eleviate the hold put on your account.|||if you debit card has the Visa or Mastercard logo, then yes.

Received a new debit card a long time before old one has expired?

Hi

I am with Halifax bank and have an expresscash visa debit card. I received a new debit card today, despite my old one not expiring untilo 2011 (its 1 year old). Now my new one expires in 2012. I was just wondering if this is normal. Also, the card number is different - same account number/sort code but the long number (16 digits) is slightly differnt.

Would like some reassurance on this. Thanks.|||I would question them why you have a new card but as for the long number, they always change because this is what people enter into their systems to deduct monies from your account so each card has to be different.

KD|||Not sure why they have sent you a new card so long before your other one expires. Check new card works ok %26amp; destroy old card - you could ask Halifax why they have issued new card before you destroy old one.

Usually last 4 digits change on new card %26amp; security code on back also changes for your safety - in case you have card details recorded with any Companies. I have been with Halifax for many years %26amp; have never had this happen to me.|||yes both cards still work. Unless you cancel your previous card its still active in most cases. I would suggest either put it up for an emergency card in case you loose your new one or just destroy it and notify your bank you've lost that card and to deactivate it.|||Good Day To You All.

How many days does it take for Paypal to transfer the refund into my debit card?

Okay, so a couple of days ago I was refunded for a couple of purchases I made from Ebay. It's stated in my log that the refund is done and it'll be transfered directly into my Debit Card because that's my primary account. But I've checked my bank and it's not there yet. So I'm wonder how many days does it take for the money to be transfered into my card? And I'm using a Singapore's bank.

Thanks.|||Took me a transfer from paypal to my bank account about two days.

It'll vary since you're using an international bank like that.

How do I prevent scratches on a credit or debit card besides not using it?

Sorry if wrong category.

I deleted my other question because I didn鈥檛 ask the question correctly. My debit card magnetic strip was warn out after only 6 months of use. It started just this week being hard to read at merchants. Yes. I have used my card a lot. I had to use a plastic bag to get the terminal to read the card. I have ordered a new card. They didn鈥檛 charge me this time. A blog person said on a different website to use tape on the magnetic strip to prevent scratches. I am not trying to get anything for free. I even asked my bank about this. They said nothing about using the tape. I want to know if the tape method works or is there another method you could use to prevent scratches.|||Use a one of those clear sleeves, that will do the job.|||According to my bank. Tape is not a good idea. People had problems using the card or got stuck in the Atm.

It can't hurt it.|||My bank, gives me small envolopes for the cards. If your bank doesn't, try asking other banks.|||Just do all you shopping online, and put the credit card in a placard someplace near the computer for easy access to it.|||Your bank can provide a little card envelope to keep it in. Just ask.|||I've never heard anything about using tape but if you do, I'd wrap the tape around to the other side of the card too so when you swipe your card the tape won't eventually peel back or cause the card to get jammed in an atm. Or just try using cash more often.

If you're a costco member, you can even buy 4 $15 cards for $55.99 (a savings of $4.01). I prefer to use cards to fund my account, but have my debit card to back it up in case funds run dry.|||yup, you can. I use my debit card to set my iTunes account too.

Do I need to confirm a Visa Debit card to Pay-Pal if I want to buy something on Ebay?

I've signed up before with a Normal Maestro Bank Card, will I need to confirm the Visa Debit card too...Basically Pay-pal put two little sums of money and you type them back into the computer when you see them, I do not have time for that! I need to buy a LCD netbook screen today, no I won't phone the bank or anything...Straight answer.|||No I don't think so.

Adding you bank account is just to verify your PayPal account and identity, not your card. I haven't added my bank account on there yet and I have bought lots of things with my Visa card

Just add your card to your PayPal account, buy the netbook screen and then when you go to pay for it, make sure you select your Visa card during checkout.

How to check balance on Six Flags issued debit card?

I did not have a bank account and am using the debit card that they gave to me. I lost everything that came with the card, so I have no idea how to check how much money is in my account. You will not be able to get an account or debit card under your parents bank account.|||1. You CAN'T open an account 'under your parent's bank account'. You CAN open a NEW account with your parents as cosigners.

2. Opening the account in person takes about 5 minutes. The debit card is produced offsite and mailed to your address. Expect the card itself is about 5 business days and the PIN about 5 days later. They are ALWAYS mailed separately to prevent anyone stealing your mail from getting both.

Can I use my Bank of America debit card to withdraw money from atms in Italy?

So I'm leaving to Italy next week for the semester. I was wondering if I can use my debit card (master card) from Bank of America there? Can I use it in any ATM or does it have to be a specific one?|||It does not have to be a specific atm. You can use any atm that has ur MC logo or star/interlink etc.. There are ATMS that BofA partners with.. however, the fees are not waived for the ones in ITALY. In EU area.. they are Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas and Barclays.

Dont forget to call before you travel!|||You can use it at any ATM that has the 'MasterCard' logo on it, HOWEVER, you must call your bank and tell them you are going to Italy, otherwise they will assume someone has stolen your card and will turn it off! How does someone steal a debit card number and put it on another card?

So I apparently had my debit card number stolen. It was used in a completely different state at a JCPenney and Victoria Secret. This person bought 3 $200 gift cards at these places. JCPenney cameras show this guy buying them and handing the cashier a card and its swipped on the register. That was apparently tied to my debit card number. How does that happen???|||There are devices that mimic ATMs that people will sometimes be fooled by. When these fakes are in operation, many a soul will dutifully type in their numbers and swipe again and again and deposit without depositing and finding the machine is "out of money" when they try and take a dime. Then the poor dupes find that that machine simply stored the information on the magnetic strip so that it's vile creator could simply recreate it on a fake card.

But it gets worse.

Those victims from the above scenario eventually learn where the official working machines ARE.

Another scam includes more sophistication, but is utterly without "faker". Instead finely adjusted radars are used to scan the numbers off the card in ones wallet as one walks dawn the street, then the copy thieves simply wait for that person to go to the ATM and observe by camera or plain eyes and telescope directly the pins being put into any real ATM.

Yet another scam is for a crook to weasel into the good graces of a store, or credit card company (or worse, the government) and steal large numbers of account informations at the source as it were.

Yet another way crooks get account information is by criminal organizations such as dope dealers and prostitution rings. Persons who use such services and pay by credit card exist and oddly enough few of them get it that such people as ply these trades are possibly less than honest more of the time than the rest of us. AND are already on the other side of the law, and thus often less prosecutable.|||They have these machines that take the information off the strip off the card. Thats happened to my boss too.

I went to the store and used my debit card. The guy said they didn't take debit, and I had to sign instead of put in my pin. What's that all about? Do I have to do anything now? Is there going to be a fee?|||Normally when you use your pin, the money gets taken out RIGHT THEN AND THERE.

Some of them are just fly-by-night operations looking to get your card info. but places like amazon, ebay, and target.com or wal-mart.com work fine.|||The best benefit is that if someone takes your credit card, you have no liability, but also you don't start bouncing checks from here to there.

If you pay on debit card and someone starts running amok, other bills you pay from your checking account may come up NSF, and you'll have penalties up the wazoo - even though you're only "liable" for a certain amount of the mis-charge, you are still fully liable for all of the bills you paid with insufficient charges.|||I use my debit card perennially...and I don't keep a credit card. You're right that you don't have the same fraud protection on a debit card as on a credit card. Therefore, only use your card on trusted sites. You can figure out a trusted site by checking to see that the url begins with "https" instead of just "http".

...and do stay away from tacky-looking sites.|||Well if the site you are buying from is secure than its safe..You can get the money back if there is a problem, yes. I use it all the time.
